Cologne is usually described as a pyramid because it does not smell like one thing for the whole wear. The juice opens, then it settles, then what’s left is mostly the heavy materials.

Top is what you get in the first minutes: citrus, herbs, light spice, the spray that hits you at the counter. It is also the part that dies first. If you buy a bottle from a two-second sniff on paper, you bought the top.

Heart is the middle of the wear, often florals, woods, spices, or that “clean” accord houses use to keep a scent from collapsing. This is closer to what other people smell on you.

Base is the drydown: woods, musk, amber, vetiver, incense. It can last into the next shirt. If you hate the base, you will hate the bottle.
